Mission Impossible 4 retains its grip on the box office

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol topped the charts again over the weekend, grossing an additional $31.2 million. The spy film now has a total of just over $134 million – just a smidgen more than Mission: Impossible 3’s final gross.

M:I4 has now become Cruise’s fifteenth $100+ grosser as a star (sixteen if you include his extended cameo in Tropic Thunder) and it again highlights his bankability; even his recent ‘flops’ Knight and Day and Valkyrie grossed $75 million and $83 million respectively.

martin freeman hobbit movie peter jackson

It won’t reach theaters until December 2012, but the first part of Peter Jackson’s two-movie adaptation of The Hobbit has been much-buzzed about recently, thanks to the release of a teaser trailer and production diary video that have provided an early look at the filmmaker’s cinematic return to the world of dwarves, elves, hobbits, wizards, and other mystical Middle-Earth creatures.

One unanswered question that has surrounded the Hobbit flicks for a while now has to do with how much the films will connect to Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings book trilogy – given that the original Hobbit novel is part-prequel to that grand-scale story, but also part self-contained, children-friendly fantasy adventure.

Jackson spoke recently with Total Film about not only the tonal differences between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings ...

star trek sequel may 2013 release date

J.J. Abrams and his Star Trek production crew are currently scrambling to settle on an actor to portray the mysterious villain in the Trek sequel – a character who may or may not be Khan Noonien Singh – so that production the project can actually begin before the end of January 2012.

Trek fans have nonetheless had plenty to talk about while waiting for an official announcement on that matter, thanks to recent casting additions like Peter Weller and Alice Eve, along with the not-so-comforting news that Star Trek 2 will be post-converted to 3D; though, on a more encouraging note, the film could conceivably also be partly shot for IMAX, since Abrams has expressed his interest in the format.

Today, we have a couple of extra tidbits of information to help keep ...

blade runner sequel point break remake

Alcon Entertainment head Andrew Kosove is involved with numerous upcoming high-profile remakes, TV show reboots, and new franchise installments. That list of projects includes a live-action/CGI adaptation of the Hong Kong Phooey cartoon series – and, more prominently, both another movie set in the Blade Runner universe and a revamping of the Kathryn Bigelow-directed 1991 action classic, Point Break.

Kosove has spoken out about his impending film slate and dropped some interesting tidbits about the current status of the new Blade Runner flick, as well as some insight into how much of a “pure” remake the new Point Break is going to be.

Ridley Scott is planning to direct said Blade Runner movie and previously indicated that the project will (in all likelihood) be a semi-sequel that does not directly connect to the events/characters ...

Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannan Hell on Wheels Derailed

Despite a week’s absence, Hell on Wheels picks right up where it left off – with Durant (Colm Meany) writing a letter to his wife to presumably ask her for a divorce, or otherwise keep her abreast of the burgeoning romance he believes to be taking place between recently widowed Lily Bell (Dominique McElligott) and himself. Unfortunately, Durant’s notions toward Lily and the note to his wife are disrupted when his train narrowly avoids colliding with a derailed locomotive.

While surveying the carnage, Durant is confronted by the Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) whose convenient presence goes unquestioned, just as his immediate accusations toward the Cheyenne fail to be scrutinized by Durant or anyone else. Of course the task at hand becomes the quest for justice, which Durant immediately tasks to Bohannan. In the first of ...
