Octavia Spencer ("The Help") and Michael B. Jordan ("Chronicle") are in talks to star in the indie drama "Fruitvale" for Significant Productions says The Hollywood Reporter.
Ryan Coogler penned and directs the film about Oscar Grant (Jordan), a 22-year-old black man detained on New Year’s Day 2009 by the Bay Area Rapid Transit police.
Coogler was shot in the back and killed, with the event captured by cell phone cameras. The subsequent trial and its verdict led to protests and riots.
Spencer would play Grant's tough and protective mother. Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang will produce the film which aims to begin production this July in Northern California.
