ABC’s “Last Man Standing” To Be Shopped Around
When word came that the Tim Allen-led comedy “Last Man Standing” had been cancelled after six seasons, reaction was divided into two types – “how dare they!” and “Tim Allen had a comedy show on the air for six years?”.
The cancellation of the show came as a bit of a surprise as it was pulling in consistently solid ratings. Explaining the decision at the network upfronts this week, ABC president Channing Dungey revealed that not only didn’t it fit the schedule any longer, the show wasn’t profitable should it return for a seventh season as they would have to cover all its costs – something 20th Century Fox TV had done in previous seasons.
Even so, fan outcry has been swift – some pegging it as a reaction to Allen’s openly Republican-leaning politics. An online petition to bring the show back has amassed 354,171 supporters to date. Now there’s good news for those fans as the show’s production company 20th Century Fox is reportedly looking to find the show a new home.
Whether anyone will be bite is the question as multi-camera sitcoms are on the way out, while any legal or contractual red tape that might interfere with such a deal isn’t clear at this point.
