Deadwood Revival Officially Moving Forward at HBO


HBO’s beloved western drama Deadwood is getting closer to its long teased TV movie revival, as a network executive has confirmed the script is ready to go and preliminary plans for production are underway.

Created by David Milch, Deadwood aired on HBO from 2004-2006 and chronicled the exploits of the titular South Dakota town in the 1870s. Noted for its unforgettably sleazy characters and its downright poetic use of profanity, the show was a critical darling that nonetheless struggled to hold a strong audience. The show was cancelled unceremoniously after its third season, with virtually no closure given to any of its characters or long-running storylines.

Mahershala Ali has been confirmed to star in True Detective season 3, should the third season move forward. The first season of HBO’s critically-acclaimed anthology crime series, created and written by Nic Pizzolatto, starred Matthew McConaughey as Rustin “Rust” Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Martin “Marty” Hart, two detectives who spent years investigating the Dora Lange murder. The season garnered acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and the series was heralded as 2014’s best drama series. HBO quickly commissioned another season with Pizzolatto again scripting the story.

McQuarrie has also enlisted the aid of some considerable writing talent with the likes of Oscar-nominated screenwriter Terrence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Carl Capotorto (Vinyl) on board for scripting duties on the film.
