Disney’s live-action panel at D23 this weekend showcased much of their 2018 slate which will consist of nine films. Whilst almost all had previously been announced, there was one new one in the group – “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms”.
The project is being dubbed a new take on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic Christmas tale. “Interstellar” actress Mackenzie Foy plays a young girl who discovers on Christmas Eve that the world has four alternate realms – The Land of Flowers, Land of Sweets, Land of Snowflakes, and Land of Spice.
The casting includes Keira Knightley as The Sugar Plum Fairy, Helen Mirren as Mother Ginger, Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer, Eugenio Derbez as the Flower Realm King, Charles ‘Lil Buck’ Riley as the CG The Mouse King, Richard E. Grant in an unspecified role, and ballet stars Misty Copeland and Sergei Polunin.
Lasse Hallstrom directs from a script by Ashleigh Powell, and the film is slated for a November 2nd 2018 release.
