The BBC has announced that fans will get the official reveal of whoever is set to take over the role of The Doctor on “Doctor Who” this coming Sunday, July 16th in a special following the Wimbledon Men’s Final.
The recent tenth series since the revival, along with the upcoming Christmas special titled “The Doctors,” will mark the third and final series starring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor. It’s expected that in the final moments he will regenerate into the 13th official ‘Doctor’.
Whoever is cast will then lead the next series which is effectively another minor reboot – new Doctor, new companion, new style and tone, and a new showrunner in the form of Chris Chibnall (“Broadchurch”).
Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Capaldi have all played the role since the revival (as did John Hurt for a one-off special). Numerous names have been rumored contenders with the most likely possibilities including Kris Marshall, Paterson Joseph, Jodie Whittaker, Tom Rosenthal, Luke Treadaway, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Michaela Coel.
