“How I Met” Spin-Off Restarts & “Passage” Reshoots
20th Century Fox TV is still determined to get its “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off off the ground with FOX chairman Dana Walden saying that the studio will push forward with different writers who will be starting from scratch.
Last season, writer Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger had begun developing “How I Met Your Dad,” but then their NBC series “This Is Us” took off and the pair were elevated to co-showrunners for that series for its upcoming second season.
With both no longer available, new blood will be coming in and Walden said at the TCA’s this week: “It’s one that’s been slowly cooked. If it’s the right idea the right execution, we’ll take that.”
20th Century Fox TV is also bullish on its high-profile vampire drama “The Passage” and is looking at reshoots that will push the series back from a proposed mid-season launch in early 2018 to a major contender for Fall next year.
The series starts out as a character-driven government conspiracy thriller and morphs into a post-apocalyptic saga with vampires spanning more than a century. Mark-Paul Gosselaar starred in and Marcos Siega helmed the pilot based on Justin Cronin’s fantasy book trilogy.
Fox has faith in it, putting funds into a writers room to work with producer Liz Heldens on the reshoots and to ‘break’ the first season. Ridley Scott’s Scott Free productions is producing.
