Set for a May 2019 release date, the film stars Larson as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who eventually takes on the mantle Captain Marvel. Her character was first alluded to at the end of <a href="https://screenrant.com/tag/the-avengers-3/"><em>Avengers: Infinity War</em></a>, when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) calls on her as he watches the grim outcome of Thanos' (Josh Brolin) plan. Captain Marvel is set to play a major part in next year's <em><a href="https://screenrant.com/tag/the-avengers-4/">Avengers 4</a> </em>in addition to her upcoming solo film.</p><p>Set in the 1990s, <em>Captain Marvel</em> is the first MCU film since 2011's <a href="https://screenrant.com/tag/captain-america/"><em>Captain America: The First Avenger</em></a> that won't take place in the present day. A 1990s setting does explain why Fury uses a '90s-era pager to contact her.
