Doctor Who Season 11 Sneak Peek to Release Sunday During World Cup
The long anticipated sneak peek at Doctor Who season 11 is set to be released on Sunday during the World Cup final between France and Croatia. The BBC is no stranger to making big announcements during sports events. They choose to reveal the new Doctor during the Wimbledon men's final last July. The commercial featured a hooded figure walking through the forest. She lowered the hood to reveal Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor.
Peter Capaldi, the former Doctor, announced that he was leaving the series and the role he played since 2013 during an interview with BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley in January 2017. Whittaker became the thirteenth reincarnation of the Doctor and the first woman since the series aired back in 1963. Doctor Who already set a precedence for this gender change by regenerating the Master, another Time Lord and enemy of the Doctor, into Missy, a woman in the eighth season. When recently asked what we should expect from the new series of Doctor Who, Whittaker said that “it’s hopeful and fizzing with wonder.”
The Doctor Who official account tweeted out a call to tune into the World Cup final to get an exclusive first look at the new Doctor and her friends. It will air during the BBC's half-time coverage of the game. This new footage comes almost exactly a year after the announcement of Whittaker as the new Doctor. The Doctor’s friends will represent a new diverse group of companions who will be played by Bradley Walsh (Law & Order: UK), Tosin Cole (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Mandip Gill (Hollyoaks). The announcement of these companions was one of the few pieces of news released about the new series.
Whittaker and her companions aren’t the only new additions to the Doctor Who Universe. Chris Chibnall is replacing Steven Moffat as the new showrunner. Chibnall previously worked with Whittaker on his show Broadchurch, which aired in March 2013. She starred in three seasons of the show as Beth Latimer. Chibnall called Whittaker “the greatest friend you’d ever want to have as your guide around the universe.” Whittaker, Chibnall, Cole and Gill will all appear at the Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic-Con next Thursday.
Though England missed out on the World Cup final after losing to Croatia on Wednesday, they still plan on celebrating by bringing new Doctor Who footage into the world. The announcement of Whittaker as the new Doctor was met with a lot of excitement and fans have hungered since for any new developments. Finally the time has come to see what this new series will look like. Airing it during the World Cup final, which will draw millions of viewers, shows how important BBC considers Doctor Who and this new incarnation of the Doctor.
