Avengers 4’s Trailer May Debunk Time Jump Theory
Avengers: Endgame may not feature a major time jump as previously rumored and theorized. Marvel Studios finally debuted the first trailer for Avengers 4 and, after months of waiting, fans finally have some sense of what the Russo Brothers have created.
There's been no shortage of speculation regarding what Avengers: Endgame is actually about, where it will actually take place, and who will appear. More recently though, it has been the film's title and trailer release date that has dominated conversation for the movie. Now that there is footage to see, many MCU fans are immediately diving in to see what the trailer did and didn't show. While there's not enough to confirm or deny many theories, there is one popular rumor that has seemingly been debunked: that the next Avengers film should feature a time jump, rumored to be five years after Avengers: Infinity War.
If there is a time jump in Avengers 4, however, the first trailer does nothing to support such a theory. As a whole, everyone is still processing the events of Infinity War and mourning those they lost. Simply put, all of the events shown appear to pick up almost immediately after Thanos' snap - or the Decimation as it is officially called.
Based on just the footage that is shown in the trailer, it is difficult to see how any of it takes place years after Infinity War. One of the biggest indicators of the lack of a huge time jump is simply the state and appearance of most of the characters. For instance, Tony Stark is shown stranded in space without food and water. He mentions that his rations ended four days ago, so we know there is at least some time passed between films. Other than that, Thanos is still on Titan with his armor hung up, Black Widow still has her blonde hair look, and Steve is clean-shaven - but losing Bucky and Falcon is clearly still fresh.
This is not to say that Endgame doesn't at some point see a major jump in time happen, but it clearly isn't right from the start. After all, while everything included in the Avengers 4 trailer doesn't point to the time jump, all of the footage could be from the first twenty minutes of the movie where a jump in times happens after. One of the most popular theories about the movie is that it will feature time travel in some way, so maybe that could eventually lead to the heroes jumping forward in time too.
Although the idea of a time jump being used to show how the world and our heroes have changed in the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War is interesting, it not happening right away could be for the best. A key reunion that many are waiting to see is Tony and Steve back together for the first time since Captain America: Civil War. A time jump would've made it either impossible for viewers to see them reunite or forced the Russos to find some narrative trick to keep them apart for much longer than needed. Whether or not Avengers: Endgame does wind up featuring a time jump remains to be seen, but there is currently no evidence from the trailer that suggests it will.
